Today is Julian Assange's 1575th day in a UK prison as a political prisoner for his truthful reporting in the public interest. He has been deprived of his liberty in one form or another for over 12 years and faces the absurd prospect of a 175-year sentence if extradited to the US.
The silence of mainstream journalists has, on the whole, been deafening as Assange rots in Belmarsh for doing the job they are paid large amounts to do. Peter Hitchens, with whom we do not always agree, is an exception.
He recently tweeted “Please write asap to the Home Secretary, The Rt Hon Suella Braverman MP, The Home Office, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF. Ask her not to permit the extradition of Julian Assange. Please be brief, polite & above all, numerous.” The Libertarian Party has long supported his release.
It is important to stress that he did not endanger others by his actions. Thousands of the documents he released were redacted and thousands more held back. The knowledge he has means his life would be in danger if he were put in a US prison.
The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either.
