Vivek Ramaswamy

Exploring Presidential Hopeful Ramaswamy's Vision

August 07, 20234 min read

This past weekend, I settled into my favourite armchair, a cuppa in hand. I tuned into that much-discussed interview of Vivek Ramaswamy with Stossell. The experience was genuinely enlightening. Ramaswamy's eloquence and depth of insight had me hooked. What particularly piqued my interest was his hesitation to label himself a Libertarian, despite many of his views echoing our core principles. While I've yet to explore his books, this video alone has given me much to ponder.

Who is Vivek Ramaswamy?

Vivek Ramaswamy is a man of many facets. Born in 1985, he's best known as a successful entrepreneur in the biotech world. He founded Roivant Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company, which has since spawned multiple 'Vants' or subsidiary companies, each focusing on different therapeutic areas. A graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School, Ramaswamy's academic credentials are impressive.

But beyond his business acumen, Ramaswamy has emerged as a vocal critic of 'woke capitalism'. He argues that corporate America increasingly intertwines with social justice movements, often at the expense of genuine societal progress. His book, "Woke, Inc.", delves deeper into this topic, shedding light on the intersection of capitalism and activism.

The Essence of Free Speech and the Power of Unpopular Opinions

In today's world, where the lines between free speech and censorship often blur, Ramaswamy's perspective is refreshing. He remarked,

"The litmus test of America's civic health is not the number of ballots cast, but the percentage of people who feel free to express their true beliefs in public."

As Libertarians, this sentiment is at the core of our beliefs. The freedom to voice our opinions, challenge the status quo, and engage in meaningful discourse without fear of retribution is fundamental.

He further emphasised the importance of consistent application of principles, even in high-profile cases. Drawing from historical events, he highlighted the significance of due process, referencing instances like the 9/11 investigations and Guantanamo Bay.

Ramaswamy also touched upon epistemic humility, stating,

"History teaches us the importance of acknowledging that our beliefs may be proven false or modified, and that free speech and open debate are essential in finding the right answers."

In a world where changing one's mind is seen as a sign of weakness, Ramaswamy's call for humility and open-mindedness is a timely reminder.

One of his standout assertions was his belief in allowing even 'hateful' speech. He argued,

"Allowing people to say hateful things must be allowed because what is hateful to one person is still a different person's opinion, and we're a nation founded on the expression of diverse opinions." This perspective underscores the essence of true free speech.

Objectivism and Epistemic Humility

As an objectivist, my philosophy is rooted in reason. Ramaswamy's call for 'epistemic humility' aligns beautifully with this. He reminds us that our beliefs should evolve through reason and dialogue. In politics, being seen as wrong is a bad thing, but I find it refreshing to find a leader who isn't a know-it-all and uses mistakes as a learning method. It demonstrates a proper growth mindset.

Questioning the 'Climate Cult'

The environment, climate change, and our planet's future have dominated global discourse for years. Yet, Ramaswamy's perspective on the "Climate Cult" offers a fresh lens. He suggests,

"The climate cult is not about the climate itself, but rather about global equity and preventing America or the West from progressing."

As Libertarians, we value the power of the free market and individual innovation to address challenges. Ramaswamy's perspective urges us to question whether certain environmental narratives might stifle this power and if a more malevolent agenda isn't at play.

The Political landscape: A Symptom of a Deeper Crisis?

On the topic of wokeness, Ramaswamy doesn't hold back. He sees it as a symptom of a more profound national identity crisis, warranting our attention given the divisive nature of current identity politics.

Figures like Donald Trump have dominated the political landscape. Heralded by many as a game-changer, Trump's tenure was marked by his unique style and a promise to "drain the swamp." However, while some found his approach refreshing, others, including myself, found it off-putting. He never managed to "drain the swamp" either, taking bad advice from poorly selected advisors.

Enter Vivek Ramaswamy. In contrast to Trump's style, Ramaswamy offers a measured, thoughtful perspective. His approach is rooted in seeking truth and reason. His discussions, whether on free speech, the 'Climate Cult', or corporate 'wokeness', are characterised by depth and nuance.

A Call to Action: Join the Libertarian Movement

As a candidate for the Libertarian Party Leader, I find myself at a crossroads. The political landscape is shifting, and there's a palpable hunger for change. Ramaswamy's insights underscore the principles that the Libertarian Party champions. But it's not enough to merely agree. We need active participation and engagement.

I invite each one of you to join this movement. Engage in discussions, challenge established beliefs, and let your voice be heard. The strength of the Libertarian Party lies in its members. As I embark on this journey for the position of Libertarian Party Leader, I'm not just looking for a title. I'm asking for partnership, collaboration, and a shared vision. Join us, contribute to the discourse, and let's shape the future of the Libertarian Party and our society together.
