Libertarian Party Policy Proposal: Decriminalisation of Minor Cannabis Offenses

November 19, 20232 min read

In the midst of discussions about the decriminalisation of minor cannabis offences in select London boroughs, the Libertarian Party is poised to present a comprehensive policy proposal for the 2024 London Mayoral Election. We firmly believe that it's time to take a pragmatic approach to cannabis offences, redirecting valuable resources, and upholding personal freedoms.

In response to Mayor Sadiq Khan's pilot scheme aimed at ending the prosecution of young people caught with cannabis in certain London boroughs, the Libertarian Party is ready to take the concept a lot further and present a comprehensive policy proposal for the 2024 London Mayoral Election.

Our plan is simple yet impactful: after the London Mayoral election in 2024, we propose to decriminalise minor cannabis offences within every London borough. This measure will free up hundreds of millions in policing costs, which can be redirected towards tackling more serious crimes like burglary, violence, theft, and antisocial disorder, making our communities safer.

The war on drugs has ultimately failed.

The war on drugs has proven costly and ineffective, leaving countless lives disrupted. By decriminalising minor cannabis offences, we aim to shift the focus of law enforcement away from non-violent, victimless crimes and towards more pressing matters that endanger our society. Moreover, this move will alleviate the burden on our criminal justice system and free up jail spaces for more serious offenders who pose a real threat to public safety.

We understand that this proposal will be met with opposition, all major political parties are in bed with Big Pharma, and cannabis is an enemy to Big Pharma. But we firmly believe that it is time to embrace a more rational, compassionate, and economically efficient approach to cannabis offences. By doing so, we can promote personal freedom, reduce the strain on our criminal justice system, and allocate resources more effectively, ultimately fostering a safer and more just London for all.

Join the Libertarian Party in our vision for a London that respects individual liberties and prioritises the most pressing issues facing our communities.
